Dead Reckoning
Dead Reckoning is a traditional navigational technique in which the navigator calculates their current position by using a previously determined position (or fix) and incorporates estimates of speed‚ heading (or direction or course)‚ and elapsed time‚ making navigational decisions along the way.
In this overview seminar‚ Thad Petteplace - MCSC’s Navigator in Residence - will walk you through the process of Dead Reckoning using traditional tools‚ examples‚ maps‚ charts.
Dead Reckoning‚ like Celestial Navigation‚ runs the risk of becoming a lost art. Since technology is not infallible‚ smart sailors will know how to do it when other systems fail.
